A warning before you continue: Madotsuki has had bad things happen to her that might be triggering, or stressful to someone. This includes things like rape, bullying, etc. so please read with caution. Thank you.

Personality:
Sensitive, intelligent, insightful, polite, deceitful, sassy, lonely.

Madotsuki is a disturbed individual. People argue over her character, and personality since the game gives off vague feelings without any clear communication from the main character. Most people see her as unstable, or depressed, and the general consensus is that the imagery and feelings to her dreams sets off an incredibly vivid and frightening aura. As you traverse through the landscapes, you can't help but see all the tiny things that shouldn't normally be in someones dreams (because things get really freaky). A good couple of examples would be the many appearances of pregnant women with their heads lopped off, floating in the sky. Another would be the appearance of Monoko, who upon using the stoplight effect, will have a horrifying shape. You never really know what you'll find, but it's obvious something horrible has happened to her in the world outside of her dreams, and that she'd rather be asleep then out there in the world.

Since Madotsuki does not talk throughout the game, she is often seen as a very quiet and subdued girl. She often sports a very blank expression as if she is fast asleep or on the way with her drowsily closed eye-lids and absent mouth. But this could be her overly apathetic nature taking its turn, not allowing her to express herself fully because she is afraid of getting hurt, or hurting others. Suffice to say, things rarely get to her, aside from the occasional scare. In the example of using the 'Knife' Effect, which she can stab any NPC she interacts with, her facial expression never changes and no NPC ever draws any emotion out of her.

The one way you can tell how she is feeling, and what her personality is is through her landscapes and how they feel to you. How they are formed, if they are dark, if the sound is echoing or quiet, and if they're dangerous enemies.

There is only one place with one NPC that causes an event to happen when stabbed, and that would be the man in the space ship called Seccom-Sensei. This place is also a very subdued, safe, and quiet area that even provides a bed for her to sleep in. Sometimes though, when sleeping in his bed, it triggers an event called 'Mars'. The spaceship crashes on Mars, which is the last stop unless she pinches herself awake. But the only way to see the ship crashing is stabbing Seccom-sensei. Madotsuki uses his death as a way to reach it. Some people interpret that he was her piano teacher who died of an overdose after a love affair with Madotsuki. Other people believed she simply spent too much time with him and people misunderstood. But his presence and area in the game is calming and sweet, and for her to peacefully enter, then stab to get something suggests she is unstable, and is distrustful of other people.

Signs of her instability, throughout the entire game, show for her random instances of emotions and then her lack of anything. There are full screen events which trigger her waking up abruptly, but other than that, there are none. She can kill, and she can hurt, or she can interact with things without much care, or concern. Because Madotsuki knows she is dreaming, and knows that she can wake up at anytime. Towards the end of the game, it becomes a little uncertain as to whether or not she knew the difference. As time went on in the dream world, she lost the thought process of knowing when awake was and what it meant.

There are times that suggest she can be emotional, like during the FACE event, which is a giant FULL SCREEN EVENT that appears for around fifteen seconds. After viewing this, she abruptly wakes up, and launches herself out of the bed. This event could be categorized as frightening, or traumatizing. So this does prove that she has the capability of getting scared, or when the moment becomes too much, she simply spooks herself and becomes stressed. (Enough to warrant a departure from the game).

Since she is a Hikkikomori (a person who refuses to leave their room, and locks themselves away), it might also be safe to say that she is either afraid of people, or shy of people and thinks they will either hurt her, or humiliate her. For this, she tends to avoid people and all social interactions so she does not hurt them, and they do not hurt her. In the dream world, she does not care for the NPC's, and does not seem drawn to any of them. She avoids one NPC thoroughly though (Toringen) because they chase her, and capture her, putting her into an inescapable place unless she pinches her cheeks to wake up.

A couple more things to add on the evidence of depression, most landscapes in her dreams are incredibly sad, depressing, or just give off a very un-easy feeling. Most of them emit a very high wave of loneliness. Most other things in her dreams support that she may have been traumatized, and this is why she seems so withdrawn and un-feeling so nothing can hurt her. (Evidence of trauma is often around the dream worlds with the vivid, and visceral images surrounding the game. Some support the theory of rape due to pregnancy, blood, and genitalia symbols).

The last thing will be a spoiler, and if you plan to play the game, please do not continue onward though it is essential to a very canon part of her personality. When she collects all the effects she finds throughout her dreams, she wakes up and decides to, instead of leaving the room, commit suicide by jumping off her balcony. The depression she has is a very real thing for her character, and that she is someone who may set her mind on something stubbornly, and may become disheartened easily, often finding no escape and giving up hope. Madotsuki is not the person to go and talk to someone about her issues. Can I hear some social communication issues?

All in all, it could be proven that she is a very quiet, sad, depressed, and lonely girl who has difficulty talking with others and she might put up a cold front with people she does not know. She also has the power to be cruel. She may also use people for her own gain, as she does not emotionally connect quickly with others. This may generate friction. (It could also be proven that she has lost her ability to differentiate from reality and the dream-world anymore, as when she jumps and lands, NPC's from her dream are near her pool of blood).

Backstory:
What exactly happened to Madotsuki before we meet her? What things did she dream of before, and had she ever had aspirations? Was she going to school, and did she fall in love? Were the cherry blossoms something she disliked, or greeted with warm clarity? We never really know any of this despite the game being so vast, and rich in imagery.

Since there is no clear way to see what happened to her, theories are instead planting in the game. Many theories that range from being wildly atrocious to lighthearted! There is no real indication of what actually happened to her, but I'll be following one of the more common theories surrounding Madotsuki and her life. The story goes as follows, and I will supply evidence to support why I believe this is what happened.

Madotsuki is a very intelligent and deeply introverted person. From the time she was born, to the time she went to school, she was never one to speak without first thinking clearly over what needed to be said. Her eyes were always clear, but distracted since she often thought of things outside of what was happening in reality; in other words, she was a daydreamer. If things were too stressful for her, she'd simply retreat into that neatly tucked corner of heaven. Madotsuki can be sensitive, and this was often a daily ritual for her.

In a point of time where her mother and father were out with her, a terrible incident happened. A car accident, something they did not see and couldn't have seen in time, tragically ended one of her parents lives along with a couple of random strangers. Madotsuki, being protected by the other parent, was able to escape in time before the collision, and would remain to watch as the incident subsided and the aftermath came in. One of the first things she saw after the horrible screeching stopped was a young girl who was incredibly disfigured, dead. She could never recognize the deceased parent because there was nothing recognizable about them.

The parent left with her was never the same. They were neglectful, lost in their own lives and their own misery. As for Madotsuki, well, that's another story.

She was left with survivors' guilt afterwards. It welled up in her for many years, and she carried that heaviness with her as she went to middle school. Considering how quiet she is in the game, I don't believe she talked a lot when she went. She did all of her homework, and got good grades but she wasn't very socially knowledgeable; this caused what normally happens. She was bullied by a bunch of girls throughout her time there, and that, on top of the still present grief over her parent, added unnecessary stress to her. Already being a sensitive type, this pounded into her like giant waves, and left her floundering on the floor for any gasp of air.

Not being the type to speak about her issues, especially with the type of atmosphere people grow up with in Japan (in Japan, you are expected to solve your own issues by yourself, and it's shameful if you burden someone with your own feelings), the problems became too great and she tried to seek solace in her piano teacher. The music soothed her, and she found herself in a place where she was loved, and was not pressured to be over her parents nor bullied by her classmates. The man who was her piano teacher loved her as well, though in an affectionate sort of way, and enjoyed her company as she presented herself with no demands, but instead quiet appreciation. She found momentary relief from reality.

Even through all of these horrible circumstances, she found a friend! (Or so she thought.) She thought her friend was beautiful, and she cherished her dearly because she was her friend. Throughout her school year, she found laughter and happiness between her friend and her piano teacher. Classes became easier, and the neglect she received from her parent become something she could bear and ignore. With the strength of people she trusted, her confidence and mind soared great heights.

That is until the betrayal.

A new person arrived in their school, someone Madotsuki had never met before. She was just as beautiful as her friend, and soon became the gossip of the week for her classroom. Within that classroom, people awed and were astounded at how great this new student was and her friend couldn't help but whisper out some compliments towards the new person. Madotsuki never thought much about it, and regarded the new student with quiet acknowledgement; aside from that, she was not infatuated but rather confused instead. The new girl looked incredibly familiar, but she never commented on it.

Soon, her friend began to talk with the new student and they soon slowly climbed their way into a friendship. Madotsuki, finally realizing who the new student reminded her of, backed off in horror and in guilt as she looked like that girl from those many years ago, disfigured and broken on the asphalt. Her friend, too involved with the other girl, did not notice her friends slow withdrawal from both of them; instead, she began to detach herself from Madotsuki, going as far as ignoring her on certain occasions. But Madotsuki was too in shock, and knee-deep in guilt to say anything about it; it hurt too much to think about.

The girl knew who Madotsuki was. She knew very well who she was, and her intentions were hurtful, and callous. Because one day, Madotsuki's dear friend stopped talking to her all together, and Madotsuki recoiled into her shell again; she didn't talk to a lot of people, but still attended her piano lessons at the desperate hope her teacher would always be good to her. He, of course, obliged her while knowing of her sorrows. You see, her teacher was empathetic and could feel her pain, having the desire to soothe.

The betrayal expanded. It spread and curled into every recess of their relationship till it struck a brutal finale. A horrible incident with Madotsuki needing protection and seeking that in her friend; an incident in which she was abandoned and horrible monsters got her. Madotsuki had been in trouble, the type that involved a boy, and predatory advances. Her friend, there for the whole ride, left her at the will of the new girl and she was, unfortunately, raped. There were measures that could have been taken to prevent this but the one person who could stop it did not in the end.

Madotsuki was ravaged, inside and out, with emotions too big for her small body. She was constantly alert, torn apart by this horrible occasion and soon her mental walls began to crack. The kind of crack in movies where one incident happens to the main character, and you watch them sadly as they spiral towards an awful ending; the type you wish you could just hug them so they could forget the pain. This was that small crack. She began to think less of people, began to trust less, and become cynical. Her once quiet smile turned into an apathetic crease, and she nervously attended school through down-casted eyes.

She stopped talking to everyone except her teacher. Her parent was neglectful, as stated above, and did not really care for her emotions and issues. She relied heavily on her teacher, even sometimes pressuring him to take her home, or let her get some dinner with him. He, being soft-hearted and slightly in love with her, followed her wishes just so he could stop seeing her in pain. Her teacher had his own issues, and suffered his own past so they made an bruising mix. He had not known yet what happened to her, and would not know till a couple of weeks later.

But that eventually took a horrible turn as did most events in Madotsuki's life.

They began a sexual relationship, much to the pressing need of Madotsuki. She didn't understand what she was doing, or why she wanted to do it and she remained relatively numb throughout the whole ordeal. While she did find some comfort with him and how calming it was to just lie by his side, she felt a storm coming that she just could not shake but ignoring her better instinct, she left it at that and merely enjoyed their forbidden relationship. She buried her problems deep down and wept nights into his chest, and slept mornings away. He never questioned, never pushed, never disturbed, merely comforted like she wanted from him. After all, he felt the same peace and comfort.

She found out she was pregnant a couple of weeks later (after the rape), and made the decision to have an abortion. It wasn't a tough decision for her, but it did deepen the crack in her already crumbling psyche. Once she was done with it, with some help from her teacher, things moved on again peacefully from there. She regretted having to take a life from within her but she understood she was too young to take care of someone, and that she doesn't want that burden on herself as the child would only suffer. It took a toll on her, and she regretted it from the very start but never questioned why it had to be done. She did, however, question why she out of all people had to be raped.

Do you remember the new girl from earlier? The one who wished deeply for her despair? She comes in again in the worst sort of way. Worst sort of way, you ask? She tells the school about her relationship with her piano teacher. You can guess how it crashed from there.

Her teacher, overcome with shame and grief, committed suicide. Madotsuki? After his death, she never felt the same ever again. She questioned everyone, trusted no one, not even herself. She took that as the last straw and found herself feeling even more betrayed. Why hadn't he stayed for her? Why did he not stay strong for her so she could for him? Didn't he love her? Did she even love him? All of these questions, these thoughts, these horrid emotions crushed her and she resumed her thoughts of daydreaming to the highest level.

She locked herself away, never wanting to see anyone. Her dreams, which were her escape, instead paint a disgusting picture of the life she once had beforehand outside of her room. From then on, she traverses her dreams, collects effects which aid or add aesthetic pleasures, and just generally sleeps.

The theory stops from here at a very sad, but canon point. After collecting all the effects in her dreams, you can drop them in the nexus, which is the central hub of her dreams. When you drop them, they all fall into a circle and you can pinch yourself awake. You'd expect something to be different in the room after collecting all those effects, which is the main aspect of the game, but nothing in the room seems amiss; she still does not want to leave her room. But when you go outside to the balcony, you find a staircase leading to the edge that was not there before. Many fans are confused about how this came to be, and others think she is still dreaming which could tie into her lack of understanding between dreaming and reality. If you go over to the staircase, and climb on top of it, she will do so and will stand there till you press the action button. She then jumps off with force, and you hear a deafening sound of impact as the screen darkens then lightens up on a pool of blood. Jellyfish NPC's (which cannot be killed) appear around the blood, and play sorrowful chimes if you know the keys to press. The game then shuts off, and returns to the Save Screen menu.

Prove my Theory
--- The stated car accident can be implied in a couple of ways. There is one area which involves a dark forest along an asphalt road. Towards the end of the area, there lies a run over man with safety cones all around him. You cannot interact with him, but he will wiggle if you equip the cat effect. There is also a girl who is disfigured and horribly horrific in another area. The funny thing is, you use the stop-light effect to trigger her transformation. Once you click to stop, she changes!

--- For the bullying, there are NPC's that will chase you around the worlds. Some of them will chase you automatically, while others will wait till you provoke them first. They will chase you as long as you're in their world, and if they catch you, they will send you to an inescapable place. You have to wake up in order to escape but they will always chase you, and you cannot kill them with the knife effect.

--- The friend who left her? The girl who told on her? Poniko would be the friend who betrayed her, and Monoe would be the girl who told on her. You see, when you meet Poniko, she lives in a beautiful room with cheerful music, but no matter what you do, you cannot get her attention! If you enter, and switch the lights off enough times, she transforms into the infamous Uboa. You cannot escape the room when Uboa comes out, and there is a loud 'AAAAAAA' noise accompanied with his arrival. This is what signifies some rape to people. If you try to stab him or touch him, he will transport you to a place you cannot leave from; this place is filled with grotesque imagery of white fluid, and a creature in the back grabbing and groping the white liquid. Uboa also seems like a person with a hoodie over them but this is subject to theory. As for Monoe, she's a person you find where you find Monoko. She has the same color scheme as Monoko and they seem like sisters! When you interact with her, a full screen event is triggered where she looks like she is sneering/smirking at you. She then disappears from you. Most of the fanbase sees this as malicious.

--- Some other stuff to prove the rape: This little guy here. You cut open a zipper in the number world which makes it bleed, then you enter and he is there. He constantly rubs the pole as it makes a squeaky noise. If you equip the knife effect, he begins to rub it faster. Going past him, you will see the FACE event which shows a horrific image on the screen which you cannot exit out of. From there, she will forcibly wake up; this is the only time she does this.

--- What about the teacher? He exists in the game. In a large attempt to get to him because it does take quite the effort and certain effects, you can find a spaceship. If you enter it, you cannot leave from it but it's incredibly peaceful as the music is lulling and the area is calming on the eyes. Seccom Masada-sensei (his fanbase name) is there playing a piano which Madotsuki can play as well. If you enter the room to the right, you can even sleep in his bed and the screen dims to signify her sleeping. You can talk to him but he only replies in little beeps. What about his suicide and the betrayal? If you sleep in the bed at a certain point, or number of times, the screen will blacken all the way and a small alarm will sound. When you get up, the ship is crashing! You can go out and see how Seccom is panicking. His beeps sounds distressed. If you stab him, you can see a cutscene that shows the ship crashing and it's the only way you can get it. It's a very big thing in the fandom of her stabbing him as a lot of resent, anger and hatred is shown in most pictures depicting it.

--- But what about the abortion? Here, have some images from the game.
